If you're in Rome and passionate about the history of this amazing city and its majestic churches, then you shouldn't miss this tour. An expert guide will take you down inside the mysterious Catacombs of St. Callixtus, dating back to the middle of the 2nd century and part of a cemeterial complex which occupies an area of 90 acres with a network of galleries about 12 miles long in four levels more than twenty meters deep. Just think that in them dozens of martyrs, 16 popes and many Christians are buried. Maybe you didn't know it, but these catacombs were named after the deacon Callixtus who, at the beginning of the 3rd century, was appointed by Pope Zephyrinus as the administrator of the cemetery and so the catacombs of St. Callixtus became the official cemetery of the Church of Rome. During your visit here, you'll pass through many different areas like "the little Vatican," the Crypt of St. Cecilia, the family tombs and see the frescoes that can be dated to the beginning of the 3rd century and represent symbolically the sacraments of Baptism and of the Eucharist.
